Delhi is preparing for extensive security restrictions ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) planned protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10, with entry and exit gates at 57 Metro stations ordered closed, mobile internet services set to be suspended in parts of central Delhi and several trains cancelled.

The measures follow concerns over potential crowd mobilisation and movement towards sensitive locations in the capital. Delhi Police has denied permission for the proposed demonstration and imposed prohibitory orders in the New Delhi district. The protest is being organised over allegations of irregularities in voter lists, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

57 Delhi Metro stations to face entry and exit restrictions

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced that entry and exit gates at 57 stations would remain closed from 9 pm on Friday, October 9, until further notice, as requested by Delhi Police. The restrictions are intended to limit crowd assembly and prevent large groups from moving towards sensitive areas.

The affected stations are spread across several parts of the network, including central, north, south and east Delhi. Major stations on the list include Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, New Delhi, Kashmere Gate, Mandi House, ITO, Patel Chowk, Supreme Court, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar and Jamia Millia Islamia.

DMRC has clarified that interchange facilities will remain available at the affected stations, except at New Delhi Metro station. Commuters should therefore distinguish between station entry and exit restrictions and a complete shutdown of Metro services.

The restrictions are expected to affect commuters travelling through central Delhi and those using interchange stations to reach offices, railway stations and other destinations. Passengers have been advised to check official Metro updates before beginning their journeys.

Mobile internet suspended in central Delhi for 24 hours

Mobile internet services will be suspended within a four-kilometre radius of the Janpath–Kartavya Path intersection from 10 pm on October 9 until 10 pm on October 10, according to reports citing the government order.

The Ministry of Home Affairs approved the temporary suspension as a precaution ahead of the protest. The restriction applies to the specified central Delhi area, rather than the entire National Capital Territory.

The measure is intended to help authorities manage potential law-and-order concerns during the demonstration. Residents, commuters and businesses within the affected zone may face disruptions to mobile internet access during the period.

Trains to New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations cancelled

Rail travel is also expected to be affected. Indian Railways has cancelled trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10, citing the possibility of severe road congestion around the stations.

The cancellations could disrupt the plans of passengers travelling to the capital for work, onward connections or other purposes. Travellers should check their train status and cancellation notices through official railway channels before leaving for the station.

Why is CJP protesting at Jantar Mantar?

The CJP has called for a youth-led demonstration against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and what it describes as “vote theft”. The protest is also seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The controversy centres on the Election Commission’s voter-verification exercise, which has involved the deletion of names from electoral rolls. Critics have questioned aspects of the process, while the dispute has become a wider political issue.

Delhi Police has denied permission for the October 10 demonstration and imposed prohibitory orders in the New Delhi district. Authorities are preparing to restrict movement towards sensitive areas amid concerns about the potential scale of the gathering.

Heavy security deployment across the capital

Police are preparing a multi-layered security plan involving checkpoints, restrictions on movement and designated detention facilities. The Indian Express reported that authorities had planned 37 blocking points across the New Delhi district and arrangements for detention centres across all 15 police districts amid calls by CJP for mass mobilization.

Reuters reported that thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were being mobilised ahead of the protest. The deployment reflects concerns about large groups converging on central Delhi despite restrictions on the gathering.

The extensive arrangements are expected to affect road movement, public transport and access to parts of the city. Residents and visitors should allow extra travel time and follow official traffic and transport advisories.
