On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Tamil Nadu Police arrested Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition and DMK youth wing leader, following intense political fallout over remarks he made at a public rally. He was taken into custody at his Chennai residence after an FIR was registered against him concerning allegedly defamatory and misogynistic comments directed at actress Trisha Krishnan and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The remarks in question were delivered during a DMK demonstration focused on the Cauvery water-sharing issue in Thanjavur on Monday, August 3.The controversy ignited when Udhayanidhi Stalin, during his address to the crowd, accused Chief Minister Vijay of abandoning public issues to solely target the DMK with “false allegations”. As he spoke, sections of the audience repeatedly chanted “Trisha, Trisha”.
What Led To Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Arrest?
According to allegations from the ruling TVK party and other opposition leaders, Stalin’s subsequent response amounted to a vulgar double entendre directed at the actress. While several senior DMK leaders on the dais were seen laughing, the incident quickly spiraled into a major political scandal.
Following the rally, S. Bairavi, a women’s wing organizer for the TVK party, filed a formal police complaint at the Thanjavur East Police Station. Consequently, Udhayanidhi Stalin was booked under multiple legal provisions, including Sections 61, 79, 192, 196, 296(b), 351(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and Section 67 of the IT Act.
Additional Commissioner of Police Narendran Nair confirmed the FIR and the subsequent arrest. Following his apprehension in Chennai, amidst high drama where police detained DMK cadres attempting to breach security outside his home, Stalin was transported by road to Thanjavur.
The political backlash was swift and severe. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK party escalated the matter by lodging a formal complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW), seeking their intervention and demanding an unconditional public apology from the Leader of the Opposition.
TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan publicly condemned the remarks as “absolutely disgusting” and indicative of a declining standard of political discourse, accusing the DMK of engaging in “cheap provocation”. BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan also strongly criticized Stalin, labeling the speech “vulgar” and indicative of the DMK’s “uncivilized and irresponsible politics”.
Despite the heavy criticism, the DMK vehemently rejected the allegations, maintaining that Stalin’s remarks were strictly in reference to the Cauvery water dispute and not directed at the actor. Following his arrest, Stalin stated, “I did not name anybody, and I did not speak in bad taste. I am ready to face the consequences, and I am not afraid of arrest”. A petition seeking anticipatory bail was quickly filed before the Madras High Court.

Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan directed the police to release him on station bail after questioning. Following over an hour of interrogation at the Sengipatti Police Station, Udhayanidhi Stalin walked out at approximately 8:15 p.m. to a boisterous welcome from assembled party cadres. Speaking to reporters later, he reiterated that his statements were not intended to hurt women and accused the TVK government of orchestrating the case to divert public attention from the farmers’ issues he had been highlighting.
