NEW DELHI, October 16, 2026: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora were detained by Delhi Police on Friday ahead of the planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest in the national capital.
Dipke was detained while leaving his residence in Jhandewalan, while Bohra was picked up near Mandi House as student activists gathered in the area. The detentions came amid heightened security arrangements around Connaught Place, where the CJP had called for a march.
According to a report by The Indian Express, police deployed a large number of personnel across central Delhi and moved to disperse protesters who gathered despite restrictions on the proposed demonstration.
Why were Abhijeet Dipke and Neha Bora detained?
The detentions came ahead of the CJP’s planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march at Connaught Place. The party had called for the demonstration as part of its campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Notably, Abhijeet Dpke was also detained last week on his way to participate in Jantar Mantar protests on October 10.
Bora and members of AISA were also involved in protests around Mandi House, where demonstrators raised demands linked to the Election Commission and the revision of electoral rolls.

Police had earlier visited Abhijeet Dipke’s residence and issued a notice advising him against actions that could affect the rights of citizens, traders, commuters and other members of the public.
The proposed march was subject to restrictions imposed by authorities. Police cited law-and-order concerns and the need to prevent disruption in central Delhi.
Protesters gather at Connaught Place and Mandi House
Despite the restrictions, groups of protesters assembled at Connaught Place and Mandi House on Friday. Demonstrators carrying the national flag raised slogans and moved through parts of the central business district as police personnel monitored the gathering.
The police action led to scenes of jostling involving protesters, journalists, camera crews and security personnel. Officers moved to disperse demonstrators at several locations.

The New Indian Express reported that some groups were allowed to march while raising slogans, while other gatherings were broken up by police.
Authorities said their primary objective was to maintain public order and ensure that traffic and movement in the capital were not disrupted.
Heavy security deployment across central Delhi
Security was stepped up around Connaught Place and other central Delhi locations ahead of the proposed march. Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed to prevent clashes and manage crowds.
Connaught Place’s Central Park, the proposed venue for the demonstration, remained closed to the public on October 16 and 17, according to reports.
Police also regulated movement around the inner and outer circles of Connaught Place. Commuters were advised to follow official traffic updates as security arrangements continued.
The scale of the deployment reflected concerns about a repeat of earlier confrontations during protests linked to the CJP campaign.

What is the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest about?
The march was called by the CJP as part of its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party has demanded his resignation and raised concerns about electoral-roll revision and the appointment framework governing election commissioners.

AISA members participating in demonstrations also raised demands related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Election Commissioner Appointment Act, according to reports from the protest.
These are political demands made by the protesters; their claims and proposed remedies remain matters of political and legal debate.
What happens next?
The immediate questions concern the status of those detained, whether further demonstrations will take place and whether police will permit any additional gatherings in central Delhi.
Authorities have said they are focused on maintaining law and order. Any further action, release or formal legal proceedings involving the detained leaders should be confirmed through updated police statements and reliable reporting.
