A proposal to construct a ‘Modi Mandir’ i.e. a temple dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bihar has sparked widespread political and social debate across India.

The proposal was approved by the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board at its meeting on July 29. Board member Ranjan Singh reportedly moved the proposal, saying the temple would honour Modi for measures that have benefited the transgender community.

The proposal has attracted attention because it involves the construction of a place of worship dedicated to a living political leader.

What Is the Proposed Modi Temple?

The proposal envisages a temple dedicated to Prime Minister Modi in Patna, Bihar. Reports about the project have described plans involving a statue of Modi, while figures circulating online about the proposed cost and scale have varied.

At this stage, it is important to distinguish between the board’s proposal and a completed or formally sanctioned government construction project.

The Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board operates under the state’s Social Welfare Department.

Why Was the Proposal Made?

Supporters of the proposal have cited the government’s policies concerning the transgender community. Board member Ranjan Singh said the community wanted to express gratitude for what they regard as greater recognition and rights.

The proposal has nevertheless triggered a broader debate over whether political leaders should be commemorated through temples and religious worship while they are still alive.

“Modi Chalisa” Controversy Adds Fuel

The ‘temple ‘Modi Mandir’ proposal comes amid another unusual controversy involving Modi’s depiction in a religious context. A “Modi Chalisa” event at Delhi’s Press Club of India went viral after videos showed participants chanting slogans praising the prime minister and portraying him in religious terms.

The Press Club of India subsequently said it did not organise the event and stated that the programme violated venue rules. It issued a show-cause notice concerning the booking.

The two developments have fuelled debate on social media about the growing personalisation of political leadership. However, no official reaction from Bihar Government or BJP has come regarding the ‘Modi Mandir’.

Political and Social Debate

Critics argue that creating temples for living political leaders blurs the line between political loyalty and religious devotion.Supporters, meanwhile, view the proposed temple as an expression of gratitude rather than an official religious or governmental endorsement.

The controversy also raises a wider question about India’s political culture: Where does admiration for a leader end and personality worship begin? For now, the ”Modi Mandir’ remains a proposal, rather than an operational temple.
